Die if I must let my bones turn to dust, I’m the Lord of the Lake and I don’t want to leave it. Deep in the night, when the moon’s glowing bright, they come rising up into the light. Under the waves and the earth of an age lie a thousand old northerners’ graves. Every eye on the coast evermore will remember the sight of the ghost on the shore. ![]() Lie where I land let my bones turn to sand, I was born on the lake and I don’t want to leave it. A tale that began on the night of my birth will be done in a turn of the earth. I’m just a man but I know that I’m damned. What am I destined to be? It’s a mystery, baby, just please don’t leave me alone. I’ve been dreaming again of a lonesome world where I’m lost and I’m on my own. Just the rocks and the trees, and my lonesome dreams, and a road that don’t ever end. I’ve been dreaming again of a lonesome world where I’m lost and I’ve got no friends. Can it be as real as it seems? Maybe this time I won’t wake from the dream? But I don’t really know this place and it’s lonesome here in the wide-open space. I watch as the planets turn, and the old stars die and the young stars burn. I lie under starlit sky and the seasons change in the blink of an eye. Just the rocks and the trees and my lonesome dreams, and a road that don’t ever end. I’ve been dreaming again, of a lonesome world where I’m lost and I’ve got no friends. The wind plays a haunting tone as I make my way through the night all alone. I feel I should know this place as the road winds on into wide-open space. I pass by a moonlit lake, a cold wind blows, and my bones start to shake. I walk on a winding road, in the deep of the night, near the edge of a knoll. I stare at a bright red sun, and I search all day and never find anyone. I feel like I know this place, as the treeline breaks into wide-open space. I run through a wooded isle and chase the sunlight mile after mile. I land on an island coast where the only souls I see are ghosts. Baby, please don’t tell ‘em just where I went. Well, I hope you live the life you want to. I’m gonna count the days ‘til you make it through. I will run but I know that I’m beat, I decided my fate with my deeds. I wanted everybody else in the world to know it, that I ain’t ever… I wanted everyone to know you’re the girl for me. I wanted everybody else in the world to know it. I’m gonna find me a life, baby, way out west. Don’t spurn me after all I’ve gone through. I will not ask for your forgiveness, nor your defense. I wanted everybody else in the world to know that I ain’t ever gonna let ‘em take the life from me. What’s a man to say? They’ll be looking for me, I should be on my way. Well, I hope you know the lengths I’ve gone to. I’m gonna leave tonight by the light of the moon. They’ll string me up for all that I’ve done. Maybe I’m headin’ to die but I’m still gonna try. ![]() What good is livin’ the life you’ve been given if all you do is stand in one place. Heading out into the unknown wayfaring strangers and all kinds of danger. ![]() ![]() Out there’s a world that calls for me, girl. Oh, there’s a desert that’s size can’t be measured I’m gonna count all the dunes. Oh, there’s an island where all things are silent I’m gonna whistle a tune. To the ends of the earth, would you follow me? If you won’t, I must say my goodbyes to thee. To the ends of the earth, would you follow me? There’s a world that was meant for our eyes to see. No time for pondering why I’m wandering on while we’re both still alive. Out there’s a land that time don’t command wanna be the first to arrive. Oh, there’s a mountain that no man has mounted I’m gonna stand on the peak. Oh, there’s a river that winds on forever I’m gonna see where it leads.
